HI, I have had this happen a couple of times and when you are climbing a grade and a belt goes, so does the temp reading -- very scary. I don't see much on this at this site but in searcing the net it is apparent a lot of people have experienced this problem with with 454 chevy in the 80's. I looked into converting to the serpintine belts and pullies ($500). That can get expensive. Some said you could search the junk yards for a setup but they are rare and hard to find, mostly, I think because the 454 is usually pulled, intact, and sold as a unit.

In trying to figure this out I came onto something that may or may not be the answer, the pully on the altenator, look at it closely. I noticed that the v-groove was smaller than the other pullies, the belt riding higher in the v. So, I went to the local wreking yard and I found a pully matching the v-groove of the other pullies and it came from an older vehicle. What I noticed was that most of the cars with the chevy engines has altenators with the smaller v-groove, all on the SB chevy motor. the one 454 I found had this smaller pulley also -- are replacement, a rebuilt not an orginal. These pullies are small, about 2" and i'm guessng that the length and angle at which the belt travels on the 454 encourages the smaller pully, ridding high, to wear the belt down and when loose enough, tosses it, or it breaks.

As luck would have it, found a lone 454 with the v-groove, serpintine belt combo intact. It's all about timing, I had been in this yard several times and this is the first 454 i have seen still in the vehicle, and for it to be untouched? Needless to say, i pulled everything from the front, pumps, pullies, everything. It will be goning to my Revcon soon, and no more belt tossing, no more belt squealing, and all for only $60 -- ye gotta love those "pull-it-yourself" wrecking yard. I do believe, however, that the problem with the v-groove set up is the replacement alternators and if you are having this problem, it is also the noise belt solution, would be to replace the altenator with one with a deeper pully or to replace the pulley on your current altenator. Peace, Dan 1984 Revcon 30' Duke
