Topic: Engine rebuild

Just an update on my 1983 Revcon Duke 28 engine rebuild.  Just could not cough up to money for the crated 502.  The rebuild is not cheap but will put this Duke back on the road.  Chevy Orange -- check out my Web Site for updated pics.  Peace, Dan  www.myrevcon.webs.com

Re: Engine rebuild

Heeelllloooo, that's how I speak noooow since gettttting the billlll for the engine rebuild.   I nearly fell over, literally, when I got the bill for the work on my Revcon engine rebuild.  Turns out, the engine rebuild was the cheapest part (I kinda knew that would be the case).  There was a lot of extra wiring that had to be done as nothing was where it belongs, thanks to previous owners.  Ended up going with and Edlbrock Preformer Intake manifold and a matched Edelbrock carb (1411). The under side was, essentially, completely rebuilt, new brakes all around, new brake cable system and stuff.  Lots of time and we all know time costs.  I congradulate those able to do the work themselves.  I might have tackled it twenty years, or more, but not today. I coughed up the cash, choked, nesrly fainted but after a little CPR, signed the check, or was it a credit card? I did get a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty on all of their work.

So, how does it run, I am smiling really big right now.  I can't wait until I'm out of the break in range.  This coach is quick off the line and goes like a bandit being chased by the CHP in LA.  the front end work makes the handling and ride so good I did not realize it could be that good.

I am super happy, and we are about to make a long test run and will report more later.  If you are thinking of doing this, be prepared to spend some real money.  We essentially have a new motorhome as we have replaced just about everything -- we reached the point of no return long ago.

Happy RVing Dan  www.myrevcon.webs.com

Re: Engine rebuild

Got about 1200 miles on new rebuild.  I like calling it NEW rebuild as it cost nearly as much as going new. I am having an idle and restart problem with the engine is hot/warm and is shut off for a few minutes then restart is attempted (any ideas?).  It will start right up after sitting for a few minutes but will immediately die, then I have to crank it and when it does start I have to nurse the gas pedal to keep it going then it eventually smooths out.  It is a carb problem and will be going back into the shop tomorrow (new Edelbrock Carb on new Edelbrock intake).

This rebuilt engine goes really well up the grades.  I can hold the throttle steady, staying out of the secondaries and pull hills at 5-10 MPH above what the old engine would do.  In the past I was going over long grades (around Mount Shasta) at 40-45 mph, now it is 50+ and when I go to the floor 55-60-65.  Its great and I am loving it, being able to pass other motorhomes on the long pulls -- loving it, yes I am.

Our break in milage was 9.5 and that encluded a lot of mountain travel. On our return trip, after the first 1000 miles the performance seemed even better and I'm looking forward to another milage check. The old engine got 11.5 on a flat run a couple of years ago but I was never able to repeat that, finally settling for 8-9 mpg on the average.  I'm hoping this revitalized engine will get into the double digits for an average but I'll settle for anything close to 10 mpg in the real world.  The performance is incredible, however, by comparison, except for the idle problem when it is hot.  Is it worth the money?  Hell, no!  But then it never is and never was.  But, there is a certain freedom and independance you enjoy that is only understood by a few. We parked out on the Sun River, not twenty feet from the bank, went for a tubing drift, BBQ, sat around a fire and then went to bed, my bed. Went to visit my kids and their kids and when I had had enough (beer, I mean)I said good night and went to bed, my bed.  I think we all know the feeling.  Now, is it worth it?  Absolutely!

If you have a minute check out my web site where I have posted some pics of the process.  Later, Dan  1983 Duke 28'
